As Hong Kong FilMart 2025 kicks off, the Asian entertainment industry is once again demonstrating its resilience and innovation. This year’s event is setting new benchmarks for regional and global collaboration, with expanded international participation and initiatives that reflect the rapidly evolving landscape of content creation and distribution. With over 750 exhibitors from more than 30 countries and regions, and 32 group pavilions led by governments of 23 nations, the event underscores Asia’s growing influence in the global entertainment scene.

Why Hong Kong FilMart 2025 Is a Must-Attend Event for the Industry

The remarkable diversity of participants at FilMart 2025 highlights the market’s expanding reach. For example, new overseas pavilions from Australia, Cambodia, France, India, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, and Vietnam demonstrate the event’s commitment to fostering international cooperation. Meanwhile, existing pavilions from Japan, the Philippines, Thailand, and Taiwan are expanding their presence, reflecting ongoing regional growth. Overall, industry insiders expect over 7,500 professionals from more than 50 countries to converge in Hong Kong, making it a central hub for networking, deal-making, and strategic partnerships.

Innovative Programs Drive the Future of Asian Entertainment

Two groundbreaking initiatives at FilMart 2025 exemplify the market’s forward-looking approach. First, Producers Connect, organized collaboratively by government agencies and industry bodies, offers a platform for producers to network, secure financing, and explore co-production opportunities. This program aims to facilitate meaningful industry exchanges, helping creators gain international exposure and forge partnerships that can lead to global distribution deals.

Second, the AI Hub pilot program, jointly organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and industry associations, focuses on integrating artificial intelligence into content creation and production. This initiative underscores the industry’s embrace of cutting-edge technologies, which are expected to revolutionize storytelling, animation, and post-production workflows.

Asia’s Content Creation Boom and Cross-Border Collaborations

The past year has seen a remarkable transformation in the Asian entertainment market, driven by increased cross-border collaborations and leveraging soft power for cultural exchange. For instance, Hunan Mango TV’s partnership with YEAI to co-produce Vietnamese versions of popular IPs, and Linmon Pictures’ collaboration with Thai firm Halo Production to remake Chinese series “Nothing but Thirty,” exemplify this trend. Meanwhile, mainland China continues to strengthen its presence, with the Shanghai pavilion doubling in size, reflecting heightened production activity and regional influence.

European film promotion agencies, represented by the European Film Promotion (EFP), will also operate their annual hub, emphasizing the market’s global reach. This international participation provides Asian content producers with invaluable opportunities for sales, co-productions, and international distribution.

Industry Leaders Share Insights on Asia’s Growing IP Power

Experts from across Asia agree that the region’s content is increasingly gaining global recognition. For example, Jangho Seo, VP of CJ ENM’s content division, highlights the importance of strong local support and high production quality in achieving international success. Notably, several Korean dramas and variety formats are being adapted in multiple regions, showcasing Asia’s growing cultural influence.

Meanwhile, industry veterans stress that face-to-face meetings remain vital. As Seo notes, Hong Kong’s strategic location provides a perfect environment for in-person networking, despite the rise of streaming platforms that sometimes limit physical event attendance. FilMart’s accessibility and vibrant atmosphere make it an essential platform for nurturing industry relationships.

Supporting Independent Films and Emerging Talent

Lorna Tee, a seasoned film producer and industry curator, emphasizes the importance of industry events like FilMart in supporting independent filmmakers, especially amid shrinking markets for non-mainstream content. She advocates for bringing wealthy investors and foundations into the marketplace, similar to art fairs like Art Basel, to fund diverse projects and elevate niche films to greater visibility.

Yulia Evina Bhara from Indonesia stresses that distribution remains a critical challenge across the region. Platforms like FilMart are crucial for connecting independent filmmakers with regional and international buyers, providing a pathway to reach new audiences and grow their careers.

The Rise of Animation and Digital Technologies

One of the most exciting trends at FilMart 2025 is the surge in animation content, propelled by China’s “Ne Zha 2,” which grossed over $2 billion worldwide. To capitalize on this momentum, the event features dedicated seminars on animation, as well as discussions on how artificial intelligence is transforming the audiovisual industry. The Hong Kong Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF) has introduced a new animation section, offering open pitch sessions for innovative projects and fostering new investment opportunities.

Furthermore, the Online IP Catalogue, featuring over 1,000 IPs from exhibitors, extends the marketplace’s reach beyond the physical event. This digital platform facilitates ongoing communication, promotion, and matchmaking, ensuring that industry connections continue well after FilMart concludes.

Balancing Tradition with Innovation

While physical networking remains the core of FilMart, digital components are increasingly vital. As Yeung explains, combining in-person interactions with online offerings creates a more effective, accessible marketplace. This hybrid approach allows participants worldwide to engage, share insights, and seize new business opportunities.

Looking ahead, the theme for FilMart 2025—“Dare to change, dare to excel”—encapsulates the industry’s dynamic evolution. Increased diversity in content, expanded distribution channels, and advancements in technology are shaping a vibrant, innovative Asian entertainment landscape poised for sustained growth and global influence.
